Inside the Numbers: Bowl Game Depression

Stay connected for news and updates

TCU fell to Michigan State 17-16 Saturday night in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. The Frogs close out the 2012 season 7-6 and are now 7-5 in bowl games under Gary Patterson. It was a game TCU should have won, but they couldn’t make the plays they needed when it mattered most. Time to go Inside the Numbers of this depressing loss.

TCU held a 13-0 lead at half time before being outscored 17-3 in the second half.

The Frogs had more total yards (288/227), passing yards (201/140), and fewer penalties (5/7) than the Spartans but still could not pull out the victory.

8 of TCU's last 9 bowl games have been decided by 7 points or less. The Horned Frogs are 5-3 in those contests.

Trevone Boykin was 13-29 for 201 yards and 1 interception. Boykin has to work on his passing game this spring because he still doesn’t have the accuracy needed from your quarterback.

Josh Boyce’s 5 receptions gave him 66 on the year, breaking TCU’s single-season record of 64 held by Kelly Blackwell.

Jaden Oberkrom made field goals from 47, 31, and 53 yards. Oberkrom’s 53-yard field was a career-long and ranks 3rd all-time in TCU history. Oberkrom finished 22-of-30 for the season.

Kenny Cain and Jason Verrett led TCU in tackles with 12. The 12 tackles for Verrett is a career-high.

The TCU offense only had one drive in the second half that was longer than 5 plays.

There are only 244 days until TCU vs. LSU at Cowboys Stadium to kickoff the 2013 season.

This loss was a tough one to swallow. TCU should not have lost this game. It is an unfortunate way to close out the 2012 season. The Frogs have a lot to work on this spring.
