2012 football schedule: love & hate in the Big 12

Did Chuck Neinas tell CDC before the invite that the Big 12 would stack the conference's best opponents into six weeks' play?

There'll be more to say about this-- lots more-- in the weeks to come. But for now, here it is: TCU's 2012 football schedule.

09/08/12 vs. Grambling St. Fort Worth, Texas TBA
09/15/12 at Kansas Lawrence, Kan. TBA
09/22/12 vs. Virginia Fort Worth, Texas TBA
09/29/12 at SMU Dallas, Texas TBA
10/06/12 vs. Iowa State Fort Worth, Texas TBA
10/13/12 at Baylor Waco, Texas TBA
10/20/12 vs. Texas Tech Fort Worth, Texas TBA
10/27/12 at Oklahoma State Stillwater, Okla. TBA
11/03/12 at West Virginia Morgantown, W. Va. TBA
11/10/12 vs. Kansas State Fort Worth, Texas TBA
11/24/12 at Texas Austin, Texas TBA
12/01/12 vs. Oklahoma Fort Worth, Texas TBA

That's two totally different seasons crammed into one year, at first glance. After Columbus Day, we'll see what the Big 12, TCU, and Gary Patterson and his staff are really made of. Bring 'em on!

Holy crap!

That is quite possibly the worst conference schedule I’ve ever seen

Can you say...

backloaded?

Looking forward to that season-ended: at Texas then OU at home. Could be really awesome…

Um, wow.

This reminds me of our SWC schedule, where TCU could jump out early with 3, 4, or 5 wins, and then lose the remaining games on the schedule. With this schedule, we could conceivably start out 7-0 and finish 7-5 or 8-4.

Clearly, the toughest two stretches this year will be at OSU and at WVU in consecutive weeks, and then finishing against UT and OU. At least we have an open week to prepare before UT. If we can survive one or both of those games in Stillwater and Morgantown, we have a reasonable shot to be in the mix for the conference title when we play those final two games.

yeah-- 12-0 ain't happening this year

but if we can go 2-2 over the last four games, I’m happy. ( heck— if we go 1-3 and beat Texas, I’m happy)

But what is amazing to me . . .

. . . is that whether we admit it or not, we are so used to winning now that each of us is wondering whether 10+ wins could happen. I guess that first unexpected loss of the season will bring us back to reality, much as the Baylor game did in such a brutal way last season.

Curious to know what you and others think would be a better than expected/worse than expected W-L record might be, given what we know now and understanding how much things might change between now and the Fall.

From my perspective:

No excuse losing: Grambling State, KU, UVa, and ISU

Closer calls, but games we should win: SMU (CGP won’t let it happen again, will he?), Baylor, and TTU

Toss ups: OSU and KSU

Wouldn’t be shocked if we lose: WVU, UT, OU
-———-
Dream season: 9-3 or better
About what is expected: 8-4 or 7-5
Worse than expected: 6-6 or worse

by TCU'90 on Feb 14, 2012 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

9-3 would be a very welcome "hello, cartel!" season.

I really want 10 wins and the Cotton Bowl, though. That’s my personal goal, for what it’s worth. (which is, admittedly, zilch.)

Iowa State might just punch TCU in the mouth

Their relatively new coach has them looking better than they have in previous years. They certainly won’t be as bad as Baylor will be this year, and most likely no where close to the level of suck that has been in Kansas the last couple seasons.

Wait wait wait

even if it’s a sort of rivalry with Baylor, you need to go into that game expecting to utterly crush them. They just lost RGIII, Terrance Gannaway, and Kendal Wright. That’s basically their whole offense, and we should all know they basically don’t have a defense. It’s a gutted team.

You also need to put KSU in the wouldn’t be shocked to lose to category, and possibly move WVU down to toss ups.

I expected to utterly crush Baylor the last two years, was surprised one year and happily not the other. TCU has no excuse for losing to Baylor, even if they do have the soon-to-be Heisman winner.

I had second thoughts about ISU after posting

You may be right about ISU. Of course, I was only typing stream of consciousness, months before a single down is played, so what do I know, right?

About Baylor, CGP’s teams tend to do well when they don’t take anything for granted. That first game of the season against them was a gobsmack for a whole lot of people on our side, myself included. My wife was so mad we lost that she couldn’t sleep that night. I put Baylor, and SMU, in the “should win” category just to temper expectations, even though I hope we show no mercy in both games.

ISU is going to be tought than you probably expect, even if I expect TCU to win

I’m also expecting TCU to beat Kansas State because it will be in FW. That should be a terrific game.

Other than that, my condolences. What a schedule. Yuck.

Not as tough as you think

OSU won’t be close to the same as last season and WVU has no defense. UT and OU, however, will be salty – as will KSU.

Seriously?

WVU has no defense? They were #11 in pass efficiency defense and #33 in total defense.

They have to do some rebuilding on defense, but AT WORST they’d be an average Big 12 defense.

Remember who WVU got to play last year

TCU would have won that conference in a walk. So would Boise. I’ll believe WVU has a good D when they play teams that don’t suck.

Wow, that back half is absolutely murderous. Still the break before UT couldn’t be better timed, and that really strikes me as the key date- if we’re going to be alive for the Big 12 title (which is our goal, even if it is unlikely our first year out) we’re going to need to beat Texas in Austin (somehow) in order to get the fanbase absolutely fired up about 0U at home the next week- which I expect will set a new Amon Carter attendance record.

Y'all realize that...

Both UT and TCU have that break since the game will be on Thursday right? So it doesn’t do that much for y’all as y’all think…

I think it’s a bigger deal to TCU than you guys for two reasons:
1.) Texas has more depth. Four stars backing up five stars along both sides of the ball means a lesser dropoff from one unit to the other, so the opportunity to get healthy means more to the Frogs.
2.) This is TCU’s first Big XII schedule and, despite the optimism of most of the fanbase, this is a grind that no one on our team has experienced, while Texas has had to navigate similarly difficult schedules for over a decade. A breather after @Okie State, @West Virginia and vs. Kansas State will be a big help to the Frogs.

your points are valid but...

its not a full week bye its like 1/2 a week since the game is earlier than it would be on a normal bye which gives you a full two weeks to prepare…

The schedule looks set up

for TCU to roll the first half of its schedule and everything from WVU on is going to push the Frogs to the limit. I would have put OSU as a problem, but losing their QB and Blackmon, I think they’ll drop off some this season.

Ok, in light of the arrests, forget everything I said about 8-4 or 7-5

It’s all out the window. With more arrests possible, and reports that only a handful of players would pass a drug test, we could be hosed big time. As in, a return to the 70s and 80s kind of hosed.

by TCU'90 on Feb 15, 2012 12:23 PM CST reply actions

the sky might not have fallen.

Looks like the drug testing actually vindicates the program, and condemns the drug dealers.

This is beyond tragic!

My sympathies go out to all of you TCU fans and the school.

TCU….did….not….need….this!

Not now, not when you are just beginning a new conference.

I’m heart broken and I’m a UT fan.

I feel much better about ISU's chances at Amon Carter

Too bad it had to go down this way though.

Condolences. Really sucks that this will have to hang over what should have been the most exciting lead up to a season in school history.

Still looking forward to a good trip when I visit Ft. Worth this fall.

funny thing is,

assuming no more starters get suspended (which may be a silly assumption), TCU really only needs about 2 pieces of good luck to be about where it expected to be, pre-scandal:

it needs a linebacker or two to emerge, and it (still) needs the safeties to get the system.

That all might well happen.
