Earlier today TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson announced that suspended defensive end Devonte Fields, the AP Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, would start against Texas Tech this Thursday.
Fields has served all but one quarter of his suspension, after playing in the third quarter against Southeastern Louisiana on September 7th.
Devonte Fields will start on Thursday night vs. Texas Tech, Gary Patterson said.— David Ubben (@davidubben) September 9, 2013
At this point it is unclear when Devonte will serve the remainder of his suspension, but I suspect it will happen during the first quarter of the SMU game on September 28th.
It's a controversial move to some, I suspect, who may suggest that Patterson wants Fields to play for the entirety of a conference game. Certainly Tech fans won't be please that the stud end will not be serving any of his suspension against them, and I'm sure we'll hear about it from folks who remember what Patterson said prior to the LSU matchup to open the season.
Namely, the "that doesn't teach life lessons" quote.
I'm over it at this point, but I don't necessarily think the criticism is unwarranted.
