Meet the Commits: Vin Ascolese

Ronald Martinez

With the first installment of Meet the Commits 2014, we take a look at former 2012 Arkansas commit Vin Ascolese. He's had a strange journey to Fort Worth, but Frog fans should be excited he's here.

It's not often that a member of your favorite team's recruiting class is about to turn 20, but that's exactly the case with Vin Ascolese.

One of the newest Horned Frogs in the class of 2014 was originally signed as a member of Arkansas' class of 2012, but an issue with the NCAA clearinghouse left him high and dry when it came time to go to school, despite great grades and a nice SAT score.

So, instead of attending Arkansas as originally planned, Ascolese went to the College of the Sequoias, deciding not to play football, before returning to his home state of New Jersey this past year to attend a community college close to home.

Originally from North Bergen, New Jersey, Ascolese attended North Bergen High School, where he was a standout linebacker for several years, culminating in a senior season that saw him record 137 tackles, 11 sacks and eight forced fumbles. He was honored as New Jersey's defensive player of the year, and was named a Parade All-American.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Ascolese was originally listed as the No. 69 linebacker in the 2012 class, and the No. 1 linebacker from New Jersey, and is considered a 3-star recruit by 247 and Scout.com. He's one of two linebacker recruits in this class for TCU, alongside Ty Summers.

The thing to note about Ascolese, other than his size, is his speed. He runs a 4.5-40, which makes him compatible with Gary Patterson's defense.

However the biggest thing, is TCU now has a kid who has four years of eligibility left, who has been working out despite not playing for two years, and who is a little older and wiser in football years. Look for Ascolese, depending on how fast he picks up on things, to possibly make an impact this season, seeing how there's a lack of depth at his position.
