The College Football Farce

Well, I guess the selection committee, ESPN and all the other cash grabbers got what they wanted. Their big sexy matchups got big sexy ratings and had a big sexy ending right in our own backyard. It was big, it was sensational and in a few years, who knows? It may even rival the Superbowl. But Kirk Herbstreit can breathe a sigh of relief. Ohio State won the national championship.

Getting lost in all of this and what will probably never be said in order to pump up the system, ESPN’s record breaking ratings and the general Ponzi scheme of this so called "playoff" is that this was not about Ohio St. earning their spot. That spot had already been given to them. It wasn’t about the notion that Ohio St. COULD NOT win a national title, I think that if you’re in the conversation to be in the final four the assumption is that you can compete for a title. In fact, anyone who is selected, even if you picked a MAC, Sun Belt or North Dakota State, could compete for a title. That’s the beauty of a playoff. Those in have an equal chance, in this case a 25% chance to win. And that’s what happened.

That is unless this isn’t actually a real playoff.

Imagine the NCAA tournament, stripped down to four teams. The selection committee could, in a given year, just decide that Arizona, Kentucky, Kansas and Duke, all usually capable of contending for a title, should just play for the championship because why not? Historic programs, the ratings could not be higher and no one who mattered would complain because those would be three great games. But no. We need to have the George Masons and VCUs, that’s what makes the NCAA tournament great and timeless. The chance that these small schools, with little prestige or tradition could compete against and beat the big boys to win a national title. Until we have a system that doesn’t immediately rule out smaller schools, either in the Power Five or out of it, this sham cannot be called a true playoff. Its four handpicked teams, politicked in using "metrics" made up by the network who owns the sham’s broadcasting rights to get big money in. If it looks too good to be true, that’s because it is. And I feel bad for Oregon because these articles and statements over that last two days reveal that the national media and the other powers that be didn’t really want the Ducks and their "quirky" offense there anyways, it was just too bad USC sucks so much.

But if it’s going to switch to six, eight or more ever it won’t be in the coming years, less, like ole’ Herbie said on ESPN Radio just about a week ago, "someone major gets left out." A rare moment of honesty there Kirk. And, sadly, our conference, which we struggled for so long to get back to, to earn our spot, in which to prove that yes Texas Christian University was indeed a force to be reckoned with, will not help us because Bowlsby and the majority of athletic directors don’t give a sh*t. Texas and Oklahoma don’t care if TCU or 42-41 or Kansas St. or even the Sand Aggies don’t make the playoff, they’re still UT and OU. In fact, they’d rather we didn’t so that one of them could be the first Big 12 (10) team to make it. Combined with Bowlsby, they won’t add two teams to even get our nominal pride back or get a legitimate championship game, that’s more money out of crimson and burnt orange pockets. And if anyoneactually thinks the ESS-EEE-CEE, the Big 14, the defenseless 12 and the we just couldn’t beat soon-to-be inmate Winston conferences will grant an exception that has already been revealed as a serious detractor, they must be drunker than a drunk Casey Pachall at Old Rips because it won’t happen. So I guess its 12-0 next year and pray that Jeff Long, ESPN and the rest of the seven headed beast of the sea don’t use the lack of championship to put us in the Cotton Bowl.

Lastly, what won’t get talked about however, is the exact aspect that the national media has been spouting ever since we demolished Ole Miss. Winning with class. Recognizing that your opponent is defeated and graciously allowing them to accept defeat. Doing it the right way. I cannot describe how unbelievably appalled I was when Ohio St. decided to score with a minute and thirty seconds left, already leading by two touchdowns. Like seriously? Are you f***ing kidding me? I mean I guess I shouldn’t expect any better from a head coach who harbored a felon (Aaron Hernandez) while at Florida or who ran away from the ESS-EEE-CEE when it got a wittle hard to win after Tebow graduated. I had just hoped for more. But I guess not everyone can be Gary Patterson. Or else he wouldn’t be Gary Patterson.

So let the revelry begin. About how much better the playoff is then the BCS. About the genius of Urban Meyer whose five star recruit "third string quarterback" was able to make throws and hand the ball off to other five stars and win the Big 14 a national title. About the "undisputed champions" T-shirts, of which I immediately vomited after seeing on that podium. But it’s ok, their team got a shot and won. I guess that’s all any of us want at the end of the day. Just a f***ing shot.
