The presumptive starting signal caller will reportedly be fully healthy by the summer.

In the midst of NCAA March Madness news, multiple reports surfaced on Monday afternoon that TCU football’s presumptive starting quarterback, redshirt freshman Josh Hoover, will be out for spring camp due to an injury. Steven Johnson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Hoover expects to make a full recovery by the start of summer workouts.

The Horned Frogs fall to 1-5 in conference play after three home losses to the Sooners.

After earning a nice bounce-back win over No. 19 Dallas Baptist on Tuesday evening, TCU baseball took three steps in the wrong direction over the weekend, suffering a three-game Big 12 Conference sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma Sooners, who knocked the Horned Frogs down to five losses in conference action. TCU (15-5, 1-5 Big 12) will host UT-Arlington on Tuesday before traveling for a Big 12 series against Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

Friday: Oklahoma 7, TCU 3

Freshman Ryder Robinson gave the Horned Frogs a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. Oklahoma surged ahead behind a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning, but TCU answered after Logan Maxwell laced a two-run single in the bottom of the inning that scored Robinson and fellow freshman Chase Brunson. Oklahoma blew the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, scoring on a trio of RBI singles as well as a fielder’s choice grounder that pushed the Sooners ahead 6-3.

A sacrifice fly led to an insurance run for the Sooners in the top of the eighth inning. TCU was held to six hits in the loss and the Horned Frogs left eight men on base. TCU also squandered a dominant start from left-hander Payton Tolle, who struck out 10 Oklahoma batters over six innings while allowing only two earned runs on three hits. Right-hander Zachary Cawyer (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, surrendering three earned runs on three hits in only one-third of an inning. Left-hander Ben Abeldt and right-hander Andrew Mosiello each allowed one earned run in relief as well.

TCU held a 2-0 lead over the Sooners after Payton Tolle’s RBI groundout and a wild pitch that allowed Logan Maxwell to score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Oklahoma responded in the top of the fifth inning, though, capitalizing on a TCU error to plate one run before a three-run homer put the Sooners ahead 4-2. Trailing 5-2 after Oklahoma tallied one run in the top of the eighth inning, TCU tied the score after Anthony Silva’s two-run single and Karson Bowen’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Horned Frogs were unable to keep the game even, however, as Oklahoma scratched two runs on a solo shot and an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth inning. Right-hander Kole Klecker turned in a mixed outing on Saturday, throwing four and one-third frames while striking out three batters and allowing three earned runs on five hits. Right-hander Hunter Hodges kept the game close with three and one-thirds of strong relief, striking out five batters while conceding just one earned run. Left-hander Zack Morris took the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs with one walk in only one-third of an inning on the mound.

The Horned Frogs received a quality relief appearance from right-hander Louis Rodriguez, who struck out one and limited Oklahoma to one earned run on two hits over three and one-third frames. Left-hander Chase Hoover added two-thirds of scoreless relief for the TCU side.

The Horned Frogs won and lost a game this past week, despite the loss, TCU earned a third consecutive tournament birth.

The Horned Frogs have gone dancing. For the first time in program history, TCU has earned an at-large bid for a third consecutive season. The Frogs did so by winning 21 games, nine against Big 12 foes, and numerous wins versus ranked opponents. This season, the Horned Frogs breezed through an easy non-conference schedule before battling a rigorous conference slate. In league play, wins against Houston and Baylor highlighted the Frogs’ impressive season.

After winning nine conference games, TCU earned an eighth seed in the Big 12 Tournament. In the second round, the Horned Frogs defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 77-70. TCU built a big lead early, nailing multiple 3-pointers in the first few minutes and recording 26 points by the 12-and-a-half-minute mark.

In the Quarterfinals, TCU squared off against the vaunted Houston Cougars. Against Houston, the Frogs were outmatched. While Houston controlled the game for its entirety, it felt as if TCU had a chance at coming back. However, a nightmarish shooting effort doomed any chance of a comeback. The Frogs lost 60-45. They connected on a mere 17-of-73 attempts. Before we dive in too deep on any topic, we’ll describe what TCU did well, what went wrong, and what the Horned Frogs must do to make it out of the first round this Friday.

The Good

The first half against OU: What a first half it was for the Horned Frogs. And oh boy, the first eight minutes were fantastic. TCU came roaring out the gates, knocking down three triples in less than four minutes of action. Forward Chuck O’Bannon was responsible for two of the three 3-pointers. In the first half alone, he recorded seven points. His addition to the starting lineup seems to be dividends as he adds size, experience, and necessary shot-making.

Other than O’Bannon, Emanuel Miller came up huge against Oklahoma and played a great first half. Miller scored 13 points, brought down five rebounds, and dished out two assists in the first half alone. The Frogs were firing on all cylinders, they scored 45 points and allowed the Sooners to just 31. TCU turned it over just five times and found the bottom of the net more times than not. It appeared as if the Frogs were well on their way to blowing Oklahoma out of the water.

Offensive rebounding: One of the few positives from the Houston game was the Horned Frogs’ ability to crash the offensive glass. TCU recorded a mind-boggling 30 offensive rebounds. The Horned Frog’s 30 offensive boards were the most since 1998. And, hauling in that many offensive rebounds ranked second-most of any team this season. Five players on the roster recorded four or more offensive rebounds against the Cougars. Surprisingly, Miller was not one of them. He had just two while Micah Peavy led the way, bringing down seven.

What led to the mass amounts of offensive rebounds was all the Horned Frogs’ misses. TCU missed an inconceivable 56 shots. The misses didn’t come as often against Oklahoma. The Horned Frogs missed just 28 attempts. Nevertheless, the Horned Frogs still won the offensive rebounding battle, 8-7. On the season, TCU ranks third in the Big 12 in offensive rebounding, averaging 12.5 per game.

Micah Peavy: TCU wing Micah Peavy scored just eight points in the win against Oklahoma, but he recorded one of the biggest highlights of the season with his steal, and then 60-foot heave to beat the first-half buzzer. Despite the low-scoring total, Peavy grabbed three boards, dished out three assists, and snatched three steals. His defense was and is always incredible. He moves his feet better than most and cuts off driving lanes like he knows exactly where his opponent is going.

Against Houston, Peavy scored about a third of TCU’s total points. He made 6-of-14 attempts which resulted in 13 points. The fourth-year guard was the only player to record a field goal percentage higher than 30 percent. Peavy also grabbed 11 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. On Friday, Peavy will likely be tasked with defending one of Utah State’s double-digit scoring guards and potentially spending time defending Great Osobor, who averages 18.0 points per game.

The Bad

Playing Houston: It was a truly catastrophic effort against Houston. Right off the bat, the Horned Frogs fell into a rut. It took TCU nearly 10 minutes to score a point. The Cougars began the game on a 16-0 run before a Peavy tip-in cut the early deficit to 14. TCU scored just 15 points in the first half, missing nearly every attempt. Throughout the contest, the Frogs missed all kinds of looks, layups, floaters, middies, and 3-pointers, nothing seemed to fall.

The second half went a tad bit better for TCU, as they outscored Houston 30-29. The missed layups and bone-headed turnovers were still prevalent, but TCU seemingly adjusted the rigorous Cougars’ defense. It still took the Horned Frogs five minutes to score, but they did put up 30 points in about 15 minutes of action. It was just too little too late for the Horned Frogs. All in all, the defeat was disappointing. It’s not like TCU doesn’t have the talent to contend with Houston, they do. The Frogs are a deep team, capable of putting up points in bunches and forcing numerous turnovers. But a lack of adjustments and a myriad of missed opportunities doomed the Frogs from the start.

Allowing runs: TCU had it in the bag against Oklahoma. They outscored the Sooners 45-31 in the first half. However, the Horned Frogs only ended up winning by seven points. The Frogs even led by 16 points with five minutes to go. It took the Sooners only a few minutes to narrow the lead to seven points. Playing keep away isn’t a Horned Frog strong suit. TCU isn’t a half-court team, as evidenced by their NCAA-leading 18.1 fast break points per game. With under five minutes to go, TCU turned it over five times and missed three shots.

As already mentioned, the Horned Frogs were outclassed to begin the contest against Houston. It took TCU nearly 10 minutes to put points on the board. If not for the Cougars’ early run, TCU would have likely played a close game. The beginning of the second half also put a damper on a would-be comeback. If the Horned Frogs were able to score more often, the Cougars would have felt the pressure.

Turnovers: The Horned Frogs combined for 31 turnovers in their two games this past week. This season, TCU ranked third-to-last in the conference in turnovers per game, averaging 12.8 giveaways. The 15.5 per game was not a drastic change, but it was still detrimental. For the most part, TCU’s mistakes are careless. On multiple occasions, TCU’s carelessness cost them wins. What first comes to mind is TCU’s horrid effort against Iowa State in January. The Horned Frogs only lost by one despite 27 turnovers.

Against Houston, the Horned Frogs turned the ball over 15 times. If not for careless giveaways and missed opportunities on the offensive end, the Frogs would have made it a close game. Seven of nine Frogs turned the ball over against the Cougars. Nelson Jr. committed the most, turning it over four times. It was Nelson Jr.’s third straight game with three or more turnovers. TCU’s first-round opponent, Utah State, isn’t a team that forces a bevy of turnovers, which bodes well for the Frogs. As opposed to half the Big 12 squads, Utah State is subpar when it comes to takeaways, they average just 6.8 steals per game.

The Play of the Week

Perhaps the easiest selection this season: Micah Peavy’s three-quarter court heave.

In other softer Bubnle seasons Cincinnati, Kansas State, and UCF may have had strong cases as well.

The Horned Frogs have advanced to the Round of 32 the last two seasons, defeating Seton Hall before falling to 1-seed Arizona in 2022 and defeating Arizona State before falling to 3-seed Gonzaga.

TCU’s First Round opponent Utah State stood alone atop a stacked Mountain West, finishing as the regular season conference champions. If TCU is able to again advance beyond the opening round, it will face the winner of No. 1 seed Purdue and No. 16 seed play-in winner, either Grambling or Montana State. Purdue fell in the opening round as a No. 1 seed last season, but returns National Player of the Year Zach Edey and is out to avenge that embarrassment.

The Horned Frogs will learn today if it earned a spot in the Big Dance and where it will open the NCAA Tournament. Which host site is the best?

Today is Selection Sunday for the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the TCU Horned Frogs are expected to hear its name announced for the third consecutive season and the fourth time under head coach Jamie Dixon. There are nine potential destinations where the selection committee could place the Frogs, which destination would be the best for TCU fans watch the Frogs begin the March Madness journey? In 2022, TCU was sent to the obvious #1 choice San Diego and in 2023 the Horned Frogs also were granted the top destination with a mountain trip to Denver. Where would you most like to travel to follow the Frogs?

NOTE: All dollar figures are from prior to Selection Sunday, once the teams are known prices are likely to fluctuate greatly. Airfare is per Google, ticket price is per StubHub.

Look, I’m sure Dayton is a fine town and to be able to host the First Four every year, the city must do an excellent job of hosting. However no fan wants its team to be relegated to the play-in game and for TCU it would be a severe fall from grace as it appeared safely beyond the reach of the play-in, but after a series of bid thieves and surprises on the Bubble throughout conference tournaments, this possibility remains on the table for the Frogs.

While 2024 does not feature any remote northeastern destinations in upstate New York like the previous two years, this season does have a remote pacific northwest locale. Spokane may be beautiful and vibrant, but it is very far and difficult to get to from just about anywhere. Given where TCU is likely to be seeded, this is also an unlikely destination as TCU will probably be paired with a top seed in a destination closer to that top seed’s home.

The NCAA hosted here just two years ago and is already back again. Pitt has the advantage of being easy to get to despite its distance from Fort Worth, as there are plenty of flights, including several daily nonstop flights from DFW. I am personally a sucker for the Primanti Bros style sandwich, but I wouldn’t say that alone is a reason to move the Steel City up this list. Outside of these little advantages, there is not much to set Pittsburgh apart for a weekend getaway and the potential for wintery weather knocks it down as a destination. Also, given the 20,000-seat capacity of PPG Paints I could see it being a cavernous lifeless venue as there are few local teams likely to be present.

While I personally have a life-long blood feud with the city of Indianapolis (Reggie Miller & Peyton Manning have brought too much pain upon my house), that’s not the reason for keeping Indy on the lower end here. The real reason is the possibility of seeing Zach Edey & Purdue in the Round of 32 in a de facto home game for the Boilermakers. Understanding Purdue’s March struggles over the years, it is still a top favorite for the championship and has the nation’s best player who would very likely feast on the Frogs.

TCU fans are well experienced with travel to and around Omaha from the many trips to the College World Series. It is a great town to host a sporting event that kindly welcomes the masses that will converge on the town to grab jello shots at Roccos and stumble into the games. Where Omaha falls a bit in the list simply the nature of the smaller city: more difficult air travel, fewer hotel rooms, etc.

Three major airports, unlimited nightlife, abundance of elite dining options, cultural & historical landmarks, entertainment choices for any taste: there is no place like New York City. While the big city is understandably not everyone's cup of tea, its ability to accommodate an event of this size and deliver a weekend full of experiences is unmatched. However the possibility of matching with UConn in Round Two is enough to send Brooklyn down the ranks. Huskies fans will descend on the city for another week after taking over Madison Square Garden for its Big East Championship run. As much faith as you may have in the Frogs, it would be preferred to avoid that juggernaut in this town.

With tons of daily non-stop flights from DFW, this represents one of the most affordable destinations to get to and to get in the door. Charlotte has an underrated nightlife and restaurant scene to pair with perhaps the best weather of all the First Round destinations. The potential de facto home game with the Tar Heels or Blue Devils makes this a dangerous spot on the court, but is certainly a worthwhile destination for an elite hoops weekend getaway.

Expensive flights and expensive entry tickets slightly downgrade this one, along with perhaps a relative lack of nightlife, but SLC covers every other base you’d look for as a Tourney destination. If you’re the outdoorsy type, on the off days you can find terrific hiking or go a bit further for elite skiing options. Plus you can hang out an extra day and catch Luka and the Mavs visit to take on the Jazz. Given the cost and distance, this is a destination fans would really need to commit to making a true vacation of the visit, but this is certainly a spot that is worth the extended stay.

The most drivable destination from Fort Worth, the most likely to have clear warm weather, a basketball-specific venue located in the city-center with easy walking to restaurants, bars, and hotels, and the only destination with a Bass Pro Shop in a Pyramid. Memphis is ideal for a college fanbase takeover and Frog fans could certainly show up and paint Beale Street purple next week. It’s unfortunate the city’s university was never able to get its finances and facilities in order in time to join the Big 12, because this would’ve made a terrific recurring travel destination.

TCU almost certainly locked up an invitation to the Big Dance with its victory over Oklahoma in Round 2 of the Big 12 Tournament, but followed it up with an efficiency metrics nightmare in the loss to Houston. A loss to the AP #1 team is not going to kill the resume and the Horned Frogs remain incredibly likely to earn that at-large bid for a third consecutive season, an unprecedented achievement for the program. As conference tournaments come to a close and many Bubble teams remain alive and improving their resumes, the bracket projections may have some shakeups before Selection Sunday, but where do the Horned Frogs sit today and how does its resume compare to those projected in a similar range?

Per Bracket Matrix, TCU is included in the field of all 115 bracketologists tracked, with a high seed of 8 on ten projections and a low seed of 11 on three projections, giving an average projected seed of 9.16, placing as the last 9-seed. At this point there is no realistic path to TCU climbing up to a 7-seed, so the question will be whether the Frogs hold firm with an 8/9-seed where a super power awaits in Round 2 or if TCU ends up falling all the way back to an 11-seed needing to escape a First Four play-in matchup to make the real Field of 64. Here’s what to consider headed into Selection Sunday:

Projected 8-11 seeds before the games of March 16. Yellow highlight indicates a team still playing in conference tournaments

The most damaging component of TCU’s resume is that its non-conference slate was so poor that the average win numbers get skewed way down. Outside of that one data point, TCU ranks favorably against all similar competitors in this range. The Frogs have zero bad losses, a very strong overall strength of schedule, and a respectable handful of Quadrant 1 wins. To move up into a sure 8-seed spot, it would take an FAU loss in the American Tournament, a clear committee downgrade to Northwestern due to the Q4 blemish on its record, and a collective downgrade to the Mountain West to harm the view on CSU & Boise. TCU will likely not be able to jump Texas regardless due to the Longhorns’ win in For Worth, but it’s also hard to imagine Oklahoma jumping above TCU given the Frogs’ 2-0 head-to-head record. All that said, it would also appear quite difficult for TCU to fall into the murky waters where a trip to Dayton is realistically on the table. That free fall would likely require all of Mississippi State, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas A&M to win their conference tournaments. You may also require more bid thieves in NC State from the ACC or Oregon from the Pac 12 to further shrink the Bubble and push those higher-rated at-large squads down into the First Four range. Even in that scenario, TCU should not be considered one of those Last Four In squads unless the committee really wants to make a brutal example of the Horned Frogs for having a sub-300 non-conference strength of schedule. The committee would be comparing against teams like Virginia (outside NET Top 50, just two Quad 1 wins, #80 Strength of Schedule), Seton Hall (outside the NET Top 50 with a Quad 3 loss), Pitt (2 Quad 3 losses, #79 Strength of Schedule), and Indiana State (Quad 4 loss, only one Quad 1 win with the #130 Strength of Schedule).

From my view, the Horned Frogs are locked into a spot in the Tournament no better than a 9-seed and no worse than a non-play-in 11-seed. It is debatable whether earning a 9-seed is actually better than being a 10-seed, where a first round opponent is of similar quality, but a win from the 9-seed likely matches you up against one of sport’s true unstoppable forces like UConn or Purdue while a win from the 10-seed gets a Round Two contest vs. a slightly more beatable foe. Where the committee will ultimately place the Frogs will be revealed tomorrow on Selection Sunday at 5:00 PM on CBS.
