Absolutely my last 2013 TCU baseball give-a-damn!

We all want to win, and hate when we don't; that's normal. We're Homers before a game, then braggarts/bitchers afterwards; that's normal, too. The more we're led to expect from our teams amplifies our reactions by multitudes. That's sports these days.

Enter the 2013 version of TCU baseball... after uncharacteristically tough football and comically horrid basketball seasons, it was supposed to finally be FROGS turn to crow. Pre-season nationally ranked #12 was dreams of grandeur kinda stuff. Then we actually took to the field, and that was the end of all that. How could so many be so wrong?

via gifrific.com

Spock-logic dictates that its too late for this FROGS team to salvage anything, and I should just shut up and passively watch remaining games as entertainment, love of the game, or at least time-fill. But I'm stubborn enough to maybe take one last look at more. I can't play sports (I concentrated on being brilliant, witty, and handsome), but I can do stats; so I sacrificed "working" last night to study them. LISTEN CLOSE, SCHLOSS...

What doesn't matter is things like being home/away, or facing righty/lefty... stats are identical there. Move along! Our pitching is excellent: nationally ranked #45 in ERA, #22 in K/BB, #54 in strikeouts. Move along again! Likewise, fielding is a very respectable #42. Any fan will take all this with a goofy grin. Sooooo...

That leaves batting (aka offense), and we all know that's where we hit the wall (aka "suck"). Out of 296 Div. 1 teams, we're #200 in batting avg. & #215 in scoring. BINGO!!! I knew it was bad, but that's BAD bad! Draw a chalk line around it and call in a scrub team! But if you still want to try doing SOMEthing, here's some minor suggestions. Still listening, Schloss?

[1] Hide Crichton's uniform; whatever he is, he's no pitcher.

[2] Mitchell & Finnegan are overthrowing trying for strikeouts; giving up too many BBs, WPs, HBPs. Put your pitching coach to work on that. Too soon to tell if Mitchell works as a starter yet; not great so far.

[3]We have no speed, so stop trying to steal bases (except for Fitz; others only 50%); wasting rare baserunners.

[4]Find a catcher (we have 5, fer chrissakes) who can throw to 2B; Bacak is a free pass to steal on (80% safe). Have they even tried Boomer there to add a bigger bat in OF?

[5]Put all your pressure/mojo into scoring early. Stats are 100% we win when we do/lose when we don't.

[6]Find a magic lamp... that's all I can think of to help our hitting. It's just that bad!

Best case scenario for TCU in B12 and post-season bowls

http://www.califrognia.com/images/michigan_j_...

I’m certainly not predicting this, but here’s the ideal FROGS outcome once the smoke clears next weekend: obviously TCU must beat OU … then KSU beats UT … and BU beats OSU.

Final Big12 standings: 1. KSU, 2. OU, 3. 3-way tie of TCU-OSU-UT (TCU beat UT, UT beat OSU, OSU beat TCU). KSU is locked into Fiesta Bowl. Most have OU getting an at-large into Sugar, but a 3rd loss (to us) probably knocks them out of that… in which case they get Cotton vs aTm (spoiling the hoped for UT-aTm grudge-match). 3rd-place teams vie in a beauty pageant for B12 #3 Alamo/ #4 BuffaloWildWings/ #5 Holiday bowl committees. [NOTE - remember these B12 bowl tie-ins are picking order by bowl preference; they do NOT have to go by any ranking]

A TCU loss to OU Saturday really muddies up the B12 rankings and likely plummets us down to the B12 #6 Meineke (vs a B10 team).

A win over OU gets us ranked in polls' 20s, then a bowl win gets us to 9-4 and just might squeak us into high teens in final 2012 poll. That will position us nicely for 2013 pre-season polls… which is vital to us improving up to a 10-2 record and competing for B12 title and/or major bowl. I don’t wanna dream past that just yet, but you know I’m thinking of a date with CRYSTAL Gayle and singing Tommy James "CRYSTAL Blue Persuasion". Only the NotreDames of the football world can pull off instant rags-to-riches stories… TCU must do it the hard way (as usual)... step-by-step. Finishing 3rd in B12 our first season here would be pretty darn good!!! That's a step... but it means we HAVE to beat the Sooners come Saturday!

http://www.califrognia.com/images/michigan_j_...

TCU moves to 10-9 in games played on Thanksgiving Day.

TCU vs. UT - mind numbing and meaningless Thanksgiving Day stats

TCU hasn't played on Thanksgiving Day since 1928, a win over SMU, natch.

UT is 49-22-2 in games played on Thanksgiving Day. All but 9 of those games were against A&M. Against A&M, UT is 43-19-2 on Thanksgiving Day games.

Here's hoping TCU does what A&M rarely could. I have to give the edge to UT, but both teams have had good moments and ugly moments this season. It may depend on which teams - on both sides of the field - show up to play.
TCU hasn't played on Thanksgiving Day since 1928, a win over SMU, natch.

Where to sit at TCU vs. SMU game?

I am taking my son to the TCU game in Dallas but I was not sure what section we should buy tickets in? Is there a place for TCU fans? Or is it okay to just buy tickets anywhere in the stadium? I also would not like to spend to much money on the tickets but I do want my son to enjoy the game. Any help will be appreciated. Can't wait to see the Frogs pound the Ponys!

BBQ Question

Headed to the Bama-Michigan game in Dallas and since you guys are in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, I was hoping to get a BBQ joint suggestion from y'all.

Having looked up a little about BBQ in Dallas it appears there isn't any Q that's good within several hundred miles. I'm sure that can't be completely true about the area. I've read about Bakers Ribs but seen a lot of bad reviews about them too. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

An early test for TCU's defensive ends

ESPN.com's Heather Dinich notes that Virginia has two of the ACC's best offensive tackles, Morgan Moses and Oday Aboushi.

Individually, they’re both talented, and Aboushi could be a first-round NFL draft pick. Together, though, they should be a major asset for the Cavaliers’ quarterbacks.

"I think there’s a level of experience there that we have," London said. "...From a recognition standpoint, from a physical skills standpoint, they’ve been in big games and have played on both sides so it has to be one of our strengths, to protect the edge, and hopefully they’ll do a good job of doing that."

London said Moses dropped about 30 pounds this offseason and it has made him a better, faster player.

Individually, they’re both talented, and Aboushi could be a first-round NFL draft pick.
Condorect Jury Theorem says TCU...

..., well, technically the Theorem doesn't say anything about TCU. But applying it (I think) to this poll of PhilSteele.com readers, I think the verdict is that TCU is going to get 5 or 6 wins in conference play in 2012. (Those scalps: Kansas, Iowa State, Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas State, and maybe Oklahoma State.)

Early voting favors West Virginia, Texas, and Oklahoma over TCU, by wide margins.

Would 5-3 in the Big12 next year be a success for TCU?

Yep; that's an Insight Bowl kind of year, and good enough for me.
