Inside the Numbers: TCU tops Baylor 49-21

The Frogs improved to 5-1 and regained the all-time series lead over Baylor 51-50-7 as TCU took down the Bears 49-21 in Waco. It was the best performance we have seen from this team to date, and now it’s time to build upon this victory. Let’s dive into this TCU win and go inside the numbers.

Trevone Boykin looked like a completely different quarterback. Isn’t it amazing what a week of practice can do for a guy? Deuce Boogie finished 22-30 for 261 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also added 56 yards on the ground and a rushing TD. Boykin’s four touchdown passes were the most by a Horned Frog quarterback since Casey Pachall threw for five in last year’s 36-35 win at Boise State.

I don’t think I can say enough about the talent of TCU’s wide receivers. I feel bad for any defensive coordinator that has to figure out a way to cover them. Josh Boyce recorded 8 receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. Boyce has at least one catch in 31 of his 32 career games. Cam White had a great game as well. White had a career-high 4 receptions for 51 yards and 2 TD’s.

The Frogs were absolutely awesome on third down. The TCU offense converted 14 of 19 third down. TCU also dominated the time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 42 minutes. That was key in keeping the Baylor offense off the field.

It was great to see the TCU defense play like we are accustomed to seeing. The Frogs forced 6 turnovers and sacked Nick Florence 3 times. Over the last two seasons TCU has had some issues getting pressure and causing turnovers at times. They played lights out last night.

Jason Verrett recorded an interception for the third straight game. He has a team-high 4 picks on the season. Verrett tops the Big 12 in passes defended (12 - 4 interceptions, 8 pass break ups) and interceptions (4). He's tied for 3rd nationally in passes defended.

The best stat of the night though was the fact that TCU did not turn the ball over. It has been a problem all season long and it was finally nice to see everyone hold onto the football. When you don’t give the opposition extra opportunities, it makes everyone’s life easier.

TCU cannot get too high off this win though, Texas Tech is coming to town this week and it will be tough. If the Frogs can build upon this performance, they will set themselves up nicely for another win this Saturday.
