Inside the Numbers: TCU Falls in 3 OT Thriller

The Frogs fell to Texas Tech 56-53 in a heart breaking three overtime thriller in Ft. Worth. TCU battled all the way until the end, they just didn’t have enough to pull this one out. Let’s break it down and go Inside the Numbers.

The Horned Frogs slipped to 5-7 all-time in overtime games, including a 4-6 mark with Gary Patterson as head coach. The Frogs have now dropped consecutive contests at Amon G. Carter Stadium for the first time under Patterson.

TCU out gained Texas Tech 516 to 389 in total offense. The two main differences were that Tech forced TCU to settle for fields goals, and the Frogs had 3 turnovers and forced none themselves.

Trevone Boykin was 26-44 passing for a career high 332 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also threw 2 interceptions. That is now back to back weeks that Boykin has thrown 4 TD passes. For the most part Boykin played well, although I thought his touch was a little off compared to how he played against Baylor.

The TCU wide receivers had a good game once again. Skye Dawson had 10 catches for 154 yards and 1 touchdown. Josh Boyce caught 7 passes for 52 yards and a touchdown, and LaDarius Brown made 2 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Jaden Oberkrom was 6-6 on field goals with makes of 32, 41, 32, 45, 42 and 38 yards. He is now 14-of-16 on the season and has made 14 of his last 15 attempts. Oberkrom’s 6 field goals set a TCU and Big 12 single-game record.

TCU had 3 sacks in the game for a loss of 21 yards. It marked the eighth time in the last 14 games that TCU recorded three sacks. The Horned Frogs came into the game leading the Big 12 with 2.7 sacks per game.

Defensive end Josh Carraway became the 16th true freshman to play for TCU this season. The Horned Frogs lead the nation in that category. LSU, Ohio State and Texas are tied for second with 15 true freshmen playing.

The combined 109 points were the second-most in school history, surpassed only by 117 in a 62-55 TCU win at Houston on Oct. 25, 2003. The combined points were an Amon G. Carter Stadium record.

This is a tough loss to take. I’m not upset though. The Frogs played their hearts out, but came up short in the end. I think this team will play in a lot of close games the rest of the season so get prepared. Time to start focusing on Oklahoma State because that one will not be easy either.
