MOUND DOMINATION
After a dismal 0-6 start to the campaign, the Horned Frogs won three out of four contests last week.
A big part of the turnaround was a dominating performance on the mound that saw the pitching staff give up runs in just four of the 35 innings pitched. Eleven pitchers combined to strike out 38, issue just eight walks and post an ERA of 1.29.
Five pitchers have combined to make the 10 starts this season. Six of the 10 starts have been of the quality variety. Preston Morrison leads the way with three quality starts and paces the team with 22 innings pitched.
The TCU pitching staff has not allowed a run in its last 23 1/3 innings pitched dating back to the third inning of Friday night's game against Jacksonville.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN
This past week, the bullpen combined to toss 11 scoreless innings. Justin Scharf, Andrew Mitchell, Trey Teakell and Travis Evans each appeared in two of the four games. Also seeing time on the mound was Nick Frey, Riley Ferrell and Tejay Antone.
Nick Frey leads the way out of the bullpen this season, holding opponents scoreless in all three outings spanning 7 1/3 innings. Trey Teakell has been touched for an unearned run over four innings of work.
On the season, the bullpen has posted a 2.76 ERA and limited opponents to a .192 batting average against. They have 34 punchouts and just seven walks.
FEARLESS
Boomer White had an outstanding weekend, hitting .625 in three games played. The freshman collected five hits, including three doubles and a home run on just 17 total pitches. White reached base six of the nine times he came to the plate.
His efforts were rewarded by the Big 12 as he was named Newcomer of the Week. He is the first Horned Frog to garner accolades from the new conference.
On the season, four of his six hits have gone for extra bases and he is hitting .500 (6-for-12) in six appearances. Even more impressive are his numbers as a pinch hitter. He has two hits in three pinch hit appearances.
HEATING UP
After a less than stellar start to the campaign offensively, the Horned Frog bats have come to life in the last week. In four games last week, the Frogs hit .277 as a team, led by Boomer White's .625 average. Three other Frogs hit .400 or better over the course of the week. Dylan Fitzgerald hit .500 followed by Keaton Jones (.462) and Jantzen Witte (.400).
The offense has been key in the Frogs' three wins this season. In those games, they are hitting .308 with a .487 slugging percentage and a .399 on-base percentage.
In the losses, TCU is hitting just .183 with a .231 slugging percentage and a .252 on-base percentage.
