Mallet had five tackles for loss among his 18 stops on the year. He recorded a career-high seven tackles, including two for loss, in the double-overtime win at West Virginia.

Paul Dawson (6-2, 230, Jr.), who tied for the TCU lead with seven special teams tackles among 14 total stops last year, is pushing for a starting job.

Dawson was a wide receiver at Dallas Skyline High School before transferring to Trinity Valley Community College.

Converted safety Jonathan Anderson (6-3, 227, Jr.) is also competing for a starting job. A two-year letterman, Anderson recorded 28 stops last season. He started the opening three games at weak safety.

As a redshirt freshman in 2011, Anderson totaled 17 tackles in a win over BYU. It was the most stops by a Horned Frog in a game since 2004.

True freshmen Sammy Douglas (6-3, 195, Fr.) and Paul Whitmill (5-11, 220, Fr.) are also very much in the mix for playing time. Both were ranked among the top-five outside linebackers in the state of Texas as high school seniors last year.

Douglas was the Scout.com No. 3 outside linebacker in Texas and No. 28 in the nation while coming out of nearby Arlington High School. He was named the Star-Telegram's Super Team Defensive Player of the Year and a member of the Tarrant County Terrific 25.

Whitmill, from Bastrop, Texas, was the No. 5 outside linebacker in the state and No. 39 in the country.

Alex Adewunmi (6-1, 210, Sr.) adds depth to the linebacker position. He lettered in a special teams role last season.
