Meet The New Guys: Denzel Johnson

Leading up to the 2013 TCU Football season, we will be profiling the newest Horned Frogs on campus who were all a part of the 2013 recruiting class. Next up is sleeper safety candidate, DB Denzel Johnson.

George Frey
NAME Denzel Johnson
POSITION Safety
HEIGHT/WEIGHT 6'2" / 205lbs.
HOMETOWN Gainesville, Texas
HIGH SCHOOL Gainesville High School
247 Composite Star Ranking Two Star (**)

Another big time steal for TCU landing Johnson. His recruitment was very similar to Derrick Kindred's, being TCU came in very late. Coaches and fans are hoping Johnson has a similar impact. Johnson is big and athletic at 6-2, 215 pounds. He played free safety and quarterback at Gainesville and has started his TCU career at safety. We all know how Gary Patterson wants his safeties to be the quarterback of the defense.

- Denzel Johnson is yet another hidden gem for Gary Patterson, a guy that has already started to turn heads in fall camp... He committed to the Horned Frogs after considering a few other offers, most namely UT San Antonio.

- Denzel has excellent size and speed and is a prototypical safety for Gary Patterson in the mold of current safety Sam Carter. He has been clocked in the 4.5 range and sports a 37-inch verticle.

- During his recruitment, Johnson was told he was being looked at as either a safety or linebacker, but now that he is on campus it appears Safety is where he will be.

- He played quarterback for the Leopards his senior season and passed and rushed for over 1,000 yards and accounted for 22 touchdowns. More importantly he led his team to a 12-1 record. But, that's not it. He's was also the team's punter and safety.

- Yet another gem for Gary Patterson to take from nothing, to something... There have been a lot of those over the years.
