In an email release earlier today, TCU SID Mark Cohen announced that TCU would adding Sand Volleyball to its list of intercollegiate athletics in the Spring of 2015. Here's the full release:
TCU director of intercollegiate athletics Chris Del Conte has announced that the Horned Frogs will add the intercollegiate sport of sand volleyball in Spring 2015."As part of our concerted effort to stay compliant with Title IX regulations, we're proud to add to our women's athletics program," Del Conte said. "Sand volleyball is an emerging sport nationally. We are excited about the opportunities this will provide for young women to become student-athletes and compete on the NCAA Division I level.""We are very excited to add sand volleyball," TCU volleyball coach Prentice Lewis said. "One of the first questions recruits ask is, 'Are you going to be adding sand volleyball?'"Now, I can officially give them the answer they want to hear. Attendance for TCU volleyball has been booming and adding sand volleyball will enhance the overall volleyball experience for fans and players alike."Student-athletes can participate on both the indoor volleyball and the sand volleyball team, but there will be student-athletes who are exclusive to each sport. Sand volleyball features five doubles teams ranked by ability. Each doubles team plays against the corresponding team or teams from other schools. In a dual meet, the winning team is the school winning three of the five matches. Individual matches are two sets to 21 with a tie breaker set to 15 if needed. All sets are rally scoring and must be won by two points. With the addition of sand volleyball, TCU’s number of sponsored intercollegiate sports will increase to 21 (12 for women, nine for men). Sand volleyball is the first sport added by TCU since equestrian in 2006.
