Around the Big 12: Week 1

Some Big 12 schools looked great in defeat, others looked shaky in victory, and then there's Iowa State.

North Dakota State 34, Iowa State 14

Congrats to Tyler for being the only guy to pick this game right, and shame on the rest of us for thinking Iowa State could even come close to beating the three-time FCS champion. The real question at this point is, how much longer do the Cyclones put up with Paul Rhoads? If they can't hang with the Bison, they don't stand a chance as they enter conference play in Week 2.

Oklahoma 48, Louisiana Tech 16

Oklahoma did what they needed to do, which was show up, and play football, to get the win. It wasn't a stellar performance on anyone's part, but it was definitely solid. Everyone got this pick right, with Marshall and Melissa getting closest to the right score (42-13, and 42-17, respectively).

Next Up: Oklahoma @ Tulsa, 11:00 a.m. CST, ABC/ESPN 2

Texas Tech 42, Central Arkansas 35

Well everyone got this pick right, but no one predicted that Texas Tech would struggle this much with Central Arkansas. The defense allowed UCA to gain over 400 yards, while Davis Webb looked good, despite throwing two interceptions. If Tech's defense doesn't pull it together they're going to find themselves in a ton of shootouts. Coachmelissa got closest to the score, predicting a 42-24 Tech win.

Next Up: Texas Tech @ UTEP, 10:00 p.m. CST, Fox Sports 1

Kansas State 55, Stephen F. Austin 16

Kansas State amassed 240 yards rushing as they cruised past SFA. QB Jake Waters threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as he contributed 278 total yards to the cause. Again, the entire staff picked this one right, but special props to coachmelissa and tylervr, who got closest to the correct score.

Florida State 37, Oklahoma State 31

What. A. Game. We had a crazy Jameis run, some incredibly solid Oklahoma State defense, and J.W. Walsh gave it everything he had. In the end, I was greatly impressed with what Oklahoma State showed against the defending national champions. No one picked this game to be quite so close, although everyone picked Florida State, but props to tylervr for coming closest (he had a pretty good week, eh?) picking Florida State by 10.

Texas 38, North Texas 7

Several staffers thought this would be a close game, and that North Texas had the chance to upset. There would be no such chance in Charlie Strong's Texas opener, as the Longhorns took care of business from the start, and coasted to victory. I had the closest correct margin of victory for this one, but even I undershot it. Meanwhile, Marshall got closest to the correct Texas score.

Next Up: Texas vs. BYU, 6:30 p.m. CST, Fox Sports 1

Alabama 33, West Virginia 23

West Virginia was another Big 12 team that stepped up in defeat on Saturday. Everyone here predicted that Alabama would win by at least two touchdowns, that is, except for Hawk, who saw this coming from a mile away. His final score of 'Bama 23, WVU 19, was the closest prediction for this game by far.

Next Up: West Virginia vs. Towson, 6:30 p.m. CST, ROOT Sports

Baylor 45, SMU 0

So...SMU is bad. Really, really, monstrously bad at football. Baylor, despite seeing Bryce Petty go down with a lower back bruise (which sounds really painful) and only play in the first half. Backup Seth Russell looked very mediocre against a terrible SMU defense, which doesn't bode well for the Bears should Petty's injury be a long-term deal. Coachmelissa had the closest margin of victory here.

Next Up: Baylor vs. Northwestern St., 6:30 p.m. CST, FSN (Fox Sports Southwest)

TCU 48, Samford 14

Again, the whole staff picked this one right (duh, or they would have been fired), with all of us being within four points of the correct margin of victory. Tyler nailed it, but had one less touchdown for each team.
