Midweek Musings: Whatever happened to having fun?

A change is a comin’

NCAA Basketball: NIT Championship-Georgia Tech vs Texas Christian Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. For those of you that have been around since before I was Managing Editor, you’ll remember these weekly, semi-off topic posts.

As a result of the massive ESPN layoffs today, I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes this stuff fun (covering sports, that is, in whatever form it takes). It takes quality people, and quality content. But it also takes a group of people who have fun and love investing their time and talent. And I came to a realization today. We’ve gotten away from some of the things that made Frogs O’ War fun.

It is, honestly, my fault. I got worried, you see. Worried about what it took to be fully credentialed, what it took to be seen as a “real” media site. I made changes that were recommended to me, because I was told if we did these things we’d have a better chance at being credentialed more often. Turns out, we weren’t.

But here’s the deal. We’re not the Star Telegram, we’re a fan site. I have spent a lot of time over the past year being anxious about what gets posted and what doesn’t, all in an effort to make the site look more official. In the end, all I wound up doing was taking away some of the things that made Frogs O’ War unique, and fun to be a part of.

So, we’re making some changes. We're bringing the fun back.

Midweek Musings: coming back. Friday Mailbag: coming back. Hot sports opinions: here they come. You’re gonna get more podcasts, too. TCU sports related ones from me and Melissa, and a grab-bag/who knows what they’ll talk about podcast called “Frats O’ War” from JT and Mason.

We're gonna be salty after bad losses, but we'll always be classy when working with other blogs. We're gonna get you more involved, with polls, fan takes, brackets, round tables, and God knows what else, because ultimately, this is for y’all.

One big move that’s also coming is this: Melissa Triebwasser is now co-Managing Editor. She’s been incredible, and she and I will work together to make sure this thing is organized on the staff side of things.

So, grab your adult diapers and get ready for the new (old) Frogs O’ War. Our gloves are coming off.
