TCU’s Beach Volleyball team earned its first national ranking in just their third season of play, debuting at #13 in the AVCA Coaches Poll back on April 24th after a strong showing at the Staybridge Suites Invitational in Tallahassee, FL. The AVCA ranks the top 15 teams every week out of 54 Division 1 beach programs (that number has already grown from 47 Division 1 programs in 2015).
TCU finished the season winning 11 out of their last 13 matches, including wins over 10th-ranked Florida International, 14th-ranked Florida Atlantic, and Georgia Southern- ranked #9 at the time. Their only two losses during that span were to teams that would end up finishing the season ranked #3 and #4 in the country: Hawaii and Florida State.
Unfortunately, similar to the College World Series, only the top eight teams are invited to the NCAA National Championships, the Horned Frogs just missing the cut at #13.
Top TCU pair Jaelyn Greene and Amy Neal have since been invited to the 2017 USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships, a non-NCAA event held in Hermosa Beach, CA. The pair finished the season winning 12 of their last 13 individual matches and posting a 21-5 overall record for TCU. Play starts today (May 11) and continues through May 13. They’ll be competing alongside 24 of the best collegiate pairs in the country, four of which they played and went 2-2 against.
The future is bright for these sandy Frogs, as they graduate just four Seniors from a team of 20 under first-year coach Hector Gutierrez. Gutierrez was previously an Assistant Coach at Florida State, where last year he helped lead the Seminoles to the #1 seed at the 2016 NCAA Championships and a runner-up finish.
