Former TCU defensive coach DeMontie Cross is back in purple this spring, returning to the school he served from 2013-2015 as linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator. According to David Ubben of DCTF, Cross is serving as a defensive analyst for Gary Patterson, with a focus on special teams, similar to the role Sonny Dykes held with the offense last fall before taking the head coaching position at SMU.

Cross came to TCU in 2013 from Kansas, where he spent the 2012 season as linebackers coach. Prior to that, he spent one year at Wisconsin and five with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. He also has prior Big 12 experience in the form five years at Iowa State.

Cross played linebacker at Missouri from 1994-1997, and got his first coaching job as a GA at his alma mater. He left TCU to take the Defensive Coordinator position at Mizzou, but was fired just two games into the 2017 due to “philosophical differences” with Head Coach Barry Odom.

A fan favorite, Cross may be able to bring some mojo to a TCU defensive that will be replacing superstars at every level, including Mat Boesen on the defensive line, linebacker Travin Howard, and cornerback Ranthony Texada. While there is plenty of talent waiting in the wings, it’s young, and the more coaching up these guys can get, the better. Cross will be focusing on special teams, and could be an asset to that unit as well as he develops his knowledge in that aspect of the game.

Cross is able to join the TCU staff due to an unexpected opening, as Director of Player Personnel Eric Russell is leaving to join Jimbo Fisher’s staff at Texas A&M. Russell, who has been with the Frogs since 2015, is rejoining Darrell Dickey, the Aggie’s offensive coordinator with whom he worked with for at UNT for a good portion of his tenure there, spanning from 1994-2006.

TCU Football began their spring practice slate this past Friday, and will play their annual spring scrimmage on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. CT.
