Looking for a great chicken place in Fort Worth?

Look no further than Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, located conveniently in the heart of Near Southside, on Magnolia Ave.

Gus’s has a special place in my heart - and in my belly - ever since my family discovered this restaurant three years ago. We were willing to drive thirty minutes from Arlington all the way to Gus’s for some fried chicken - it’s just that good.

I remember my first visit and saying “what’s so special about a place that only serves chicken… it’s just going to be like a normal place where they use an old buttermilk recipe to give the illusion of being different.” But man... I was dead wrong. After our first visit to Gus’s we went back two more times that same week.

Now what makes Gus’s fried chicken so special?

Well when you first walk into Gus’s you can tell that it has a strong southern hospitality feeling.

The checkered picnic table cloths, the concrete floor, the wooden chairs, styrofoam plates, and the plastic silverware manifests the feeling of a family picnic. Nothing fancy about the atmosphere but, it sure does get you in the mood for some fried chicken.

On the menu you can order the basics of fried chicken from breasts, thighs, legs, wings and tenders. They also have amazing sides that you don’t want to ignore when ordering. A standard meal comes with baked beans and coleslaw but you can substitute either sides for fried okra, potato salad, greens, seasoned fries, mac and cheese or a whole jalapeno.

My usual order includes four chicken tenders and double mac and cheese with a side of honey mustard. For me, the chicken tenders are just easier for me to eat without having to work around a bone, but I have tried the two piece white and it’s equally as delicious. You really can’t go wrong with any of their options, to be honest. Even the chicken tenders are out of this world.

The mac and cheese is so phenomenal that I order double the serving. Served hot and coated with a perfect amount of cheese with a touch of their spicy seasoning, each bite just makes you want more and more. The balance between the cheese and seasoning just gives it more of a unique flavor and it truly melts in your mouth. You can’t go wrong with the fried okra, either - a great crunch with your fried fresh okra is a perfect pre-meal snack.

Now the chicken... wether it’s chicken tenders or any other option on the menu, you will always get fresh meat. The thing that sets Gus’s apart from other chicken places is their unique batter, that gives the pieces a nice spicy kick and a crust that layers the meat with a totally different texture from regular fried chicken. It’s a lighter crust that allows the meat to shine, so that you don’t get all crust in every bite.

The spice level varies from the chicken tenders to the other chicken items from the menu, with the tenders being on the mild side while the breasts, thighs, legs and wings have more of a heat kick. To balance out the heat, I recommend the honey mustard - just a bit sweet to cool down your mouth. Sweet and spicy just pairs well with fried chicken.

And don’t forget about dessert! Their pies include pecan, chess, chocolate chess, sweet potato and coconut. I always get chocolate chess because it reminds me of a Ghirardelli brownie. You can ask them to heat your chocolate chess pie with a scoop of ice cream to conclude your meal with the perfect sweet note.

Overall Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is one of my favorite places to go to for fried chicken. They also have to-go orders and uber eats delivers if you prefer to eat and run or eat at home. The only downside about the location is the parking and limited seating.

Gus’s Fried Chicken is located at 1076 W Magnolia Ave.

One last note, Gus’s has a pretty cool charitable cause. See the note below for more information:
