NCAA Football: College Football Playoff National Championship-Clemson vs Louisiana State

Yeah, I’m Gonna Have To Call You Back: History Lesson Style

The week of the National Championship, and some history repeating itself.

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Geaux Tigers!

When LSU secured the National Championship win over Clemson last night, they sealed the deal for going down as one of the best football teams to ever compete.

In the 2019 season, Joe Burrow won: a Heisman, Walter Camp, Maxwell, and Davey O’Brien awards. He also finished the season with 5,671 yards, 60 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and a 76.3% completion rate. Those 60 touchdowns also put him down in history for most passing touchdowns in FBS history.

Grant Delpit won the Jim Thorpe award, which is for the best defensive back in college football. He as well had a historical season by proving to be the best back in the country. He finished with 65 total tackles, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 interceptions.

Ja’Marr Chase was able to secure the Fred Biletnikoff award, which goes to the best receiver in college football. Chase was a serious threat and talent to any opponent this year. There was not one game where anyone was able to put the clamps on him. He finished this season with 84 receptions, 1,780 yards, 20 touchdowns, and a 78-yard catch.

As if that weren’t enough awards, Ed Orgeron also won the AP College Football Coach of the Year. His performance at LSU for the past 4 years just speaks to his coaching superiority. He’s gone 40-9, and taken the team to a 4-1 bowl game record.

The last time LSU finished the season undefeated and national champions was 1958, and it’s safe to say this 2019 football team has now become the best to exist in program history.

Bob Huggins follow up

Last week I discussed the situation around Bob Huggins, and this week we discovered Bob Huggins would be fined $10,000. That’s not really a shock to anyone, we knew that after his second offense the punishment would escalate. Even though this is only his second time to call an official out like this, Huggins is known to say what he thinks. At what point will the Big 12 decide to set Huggins straight, or will they continue to turn a blind eye?

Clemson basketball makes history

While the Clemson football team might have lost, the basketball team just had a historical win. For the first time in program history, the Tigers beat the North Carolina Tar Heels. While this wasn’t a terrible loss for the Tar Heels, 79-76, the team is on track for their worst season ever. Many are saying their NCAA tournament spot is at risk, and it’s possible they won’t even have a winning season. Roy Williams, UNC coach, has even suggested that the team should fire him. Clemson’s next game is tonight against Duke, and UNC takes on Pittsburgh this Saturday.

Baylor takes down Kansas

It’s starting to seem that if one Baylor sport dominates, the others follow suite. The Football team started their season 9-0, and now the basketball team is off to an impressive 13-1 start- with TCU not far behind at 12-3. While their record speaks talent in itself, they recently just gave the Kansas Jayhawks a smack down in Lawrence. The win at Allen Fieldhouse was 17 years in the making. To put this in perspective. the Bears who secured this victory wouldn’t be able to remember the last time Baylor won in Lawrence. The 67-55 loss gave Kansas one of their worst beatdowns in the Bob Self era, tying with Texas Tech. Baylor, who now sits at no. 2, is back in action tomorrow night against the 8-7 Iowa State Cyclones.

SDSU remains undefeated

The Aztecs have had their first 16-0 start since the 2010 season. The only difference between the team then and now is 2x NBA champion and 2x NBA Finals MVP, Kawhi Leonard. This year’s team, however, is winning out of skill and not just luck like most people are suggesting. The no. 7 SDSU team has taken down notable teams like BYU, Creighton, Utah, Boise State and Grand Canyon. Many analysts have the Aztecs winning out in their conference, through computer calculations, and even posing as a major threat in the NCAA tournament. Either way, their next game is an away game against Fresno State at 10pm tonight, so they’ll need to take it one game at a time in order to fulfill this powerhouse name they’re being given
