West Virginia 81, TCU 49: Frogs get run for first Big 12 loss of season

That was tough.

NCAA Basketball: Texas Christian at West Virginia Ben Queen-USA TODAY Sports

TCU got run out of the building on Tuesday night, 80-49 by West Virginia.

They shot less than 34% from the floor for the third consecutive game, got out-rebounded 38-24, and were overwhelmed for the majority of the night by a bigger, better West Virginia team.

It was the first time all season TCU was really overmatched.

Desmond Bane and RJ Nembhard led the scoring effort for TCU, combining for 27 points for the Frogs.

The first half saw TCU hang around early, holding leads of 9-5 and 11-9 before West Virginia really clamped down.

The Mountaineer defense compounded the issues we’ve seen TCU have on offense throughout this season. The Frogs’ stagnant offense - one that stems from a lack of player movement - couldn’t find any consistency in the first half. They shot just 7-20 from the floor, turned it over 10 times, and generally looked out of sorts.

It didn’t help matters that Desmond Bane played just 11 minutes, spending a lot of time on the bench in foul trouble.

Non-Desmond Bane Horned Frogs scored just 16 first-half points, while West Virginia shot 58% from the floor and out-rebounded TCU 19-9.

All of that led to TCU trailing 37-23 at the break.

The second half wasn’t much better.

TCU shot marginally better from the floor, but they consistently were outworked on the boards, and they continued to turn the ball over.

We don’t really need to dwell on it much. The Frogs have a lot to work on if they want to compete with the top teams in the conference.

The Frogs travel to Norman on Saturday for a 1:00pm matchup with Oklahoma as both teams look to get back on track.
