When talks of athletes profiting off their names came up a couple of years ago, a very heated debate was set off. They already have scholarships to school, what else do they need? The sports take up so much of their time that they don’t have the ability to get a job, why can’t we pay them for their hard work? Both sides have a valid argument, but it seems that it no longer matters what the general public think.
Yesterday the NCAA Board of Governors supported notion to allow college athletes to be compensated. This is only the first hurdle in a long road of approvals. The NCAA is expected to write the final rules by October 31st of this year. This means they would not apply to this upcoming athletic season, but to the 2021-22 year.
It’s important to remember that if this does get approved, which is very likely, the athletes will not be getting paid to win games, or be paid from their school. They would however get paid for social media endorsements, company partnerships, athletic lessons, and meet and greets. When the rules are put in that context, I think the athletes do deserve to be compensated for their hard work.
