Men’s Basketball: TCU ranks 41st in initial 2023-24 NCAA NET Rankings

The Big 12 holds the top 2 spots and eight of the Top 50 to rank as top overall conference.

The NCAA released the first official NET rankings of the 2023-24 season on Monday, with the TCU Horned Frogs coming in at number 41 overall. The Big 12 is featured prominently in the first ranking, with the Houston and BYU Cougars taking the top two spots and seven conference members ranked in the Top 20.

The NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) was implemented by the NCAA in 2018 as a better method of comparing teams than the previously used RPI, which only accounted for winning percentage and that of your opponents. The NET sorts teams into buckets (or “Quadrants”) for purposes of properly weighting and comparing resume performance. The system gives value to who you play and defeat (quality of win - particularly away from home) and the scoring efficiency (net points per 100 possessions). Beat good teams by a bunch to move up, lose to bad teams by a bunch to move down.

Though TCU remains undefeated, it has only played one game outside of Quadrant 4: Saturday’s buzzer-beating road victory over #221 Georgetown Hoyas qualifies as a Quad 3 win for the Frogs. Even after the win, the Frogs have kept the worst strength of schedule in D1 basketball, but the dominant efficiency numbers are keeping TCU afloat in the Top 50 of these early rankings. TCU will get its first Q1 opportunity this coming Saturday, taking on #18 Clemson in Toronto. TCU finished the 2022-23 campaign at #27 in the NET, earning a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

On average, the Big 12 ranks as the clear top conference overall, with an average NET ranking of 63. This average is being brought down greatly due to poor starts from #196 Oklahoma State and #209 West Virginia, the only outliers as the rest of the conference sits at 112 or better. The next best conference is the Big Ten with an average rank of 79.
