Sam Houston State v. Dallas Baptist Recap: Single City

Bearkats win first game of FW regional

Tom Szczerbowski

Twenty hits, three runs. That's the kind of ballgame the opening game of the Fort Worth Regional was. The Bearkats struck first in the second inning thanks to a gnarly bloop single. DBU made things interesting in the bottom of 3rd---mostly do to a big overthrow by the Sam Houston State third baseman. But the Bearkats responded well; striking out the next better and picking off the runner at second to end the inning.

The Patriots struck back in the bottom of the 5th thanks to a double off the wall---a double that was about a foot away from being out of the park. Dallas Baptist, despite scoring the tying run and loading the bases, couldn't get passed the Bearkat resiliency and were unable to capitalize on an inning that could've potentially been much greater. The Bearkats would get the winning run the top of the 8th thanks to an RBI single---ruled an error---that basically turned into a triple---to give us our final score of 2-1.

The starting pitching performances of DBU's Cy Sneed and SHSU's Tyler Eppler were both very solid. But the biggest highlight of the game was Sam Houston State's closer, Alan Scott. The Patriots had absolutely no answer for Scott, who struck out four in two-innings.

Sam Houston will play the winner of tonight's game.
