Casey Pachall's tenure at TCU ended abruptly last week, when he was suspended for the season following an arrest for DUI. Today, Gary Patterson announced that Pachall will dis-enroll from TCU, and enter an inpatient rehabilitation facility. Now, the Frogs need to move on, and with Trevone Boykin at the helm, things are looking to the future.

The suspicions (and wants) of many were confirmed today when Gary Patterson, during his weekly Tuesday press conference, Casey Pachall is gone.

Pachall, suspended indefinitely last Thursday after being arrested for DUI, blew a .17 late Wednesday night after running a stop sign and hitting a curb, according to Fort Worth police.

"After having a very long conversation with Casey and his parents, the chancellor and my staff, Casey will dis-enroll from [TCU] for this semester. He will enter an inpatient facility...and hopefully our plan is he gets himself right and gets where we can bring him back in the spring," Patterson said Tuesday afternoon.

Some other Patterson quotes from his press conference:

"We won games before Casey Pachall was the quarterback, and we'll win games after Casey Pachall was the quarterback."

"He's going to a place where they have trained professionals who are supposed to make a difference."

"We move on, that's what you have to do."

And just like that, a promising collegiate career, and possible NFL stardom, came crashing to the ground, for now. I have my doubts that Casey will return to TCU in the spring, but I'm sure he will land somewhere. However, for now, TCU must move forward without its budding star, and the reigns of this team are firmly in the hands of redshirt freshman Trevone Boykin.

Boykin's first start against Iowa State was shaky, but he showed promise. He threw for 270 yards, the most a TCU freshman has thrown for since Andy Dalton did so in 2007 (Dalton threw for 298 yards against San Diego State). Boykin completed 23 of 40 pass attempts, including a touchdown pass to Aundre Dean to go with three interceptions.

Boykin also ran for 39 yards on 14 carries, showing off his versatility. Lest we forget, Trevone ran for more touchdowns (30) than he threw (24) during his senior season at West Mesquite.

I'd also like to remind our FOW readers that when Andy Dalton was a redshirt freshman those many moons ago, he threw for more interceptions (11) than he did touchdowns (10) en route to an 8-5 record and a bowl victory over Iowa State.

The point is, there are going to be some growing pains with Boykin, just like there were with Dalton. It's important that the fans understand this, and support Boykin through the mistakes he's bound to make.

This team, already suffering from extensive losses (I think Angry Trey said we've breached the 20 players out mark for the season now), is going to struggle to make a bowl game now.

The combined record of TCU's remaining opponents currently sits at 24-4, and four teams are currently ranked in the Top 25 (two rank in the Top 10 in both the AP and Coaches polls).

I see this as a perfect opportunity for Boykin, along with the rest of this young TCU team, to grow and play against the top tier of Big 12 teams with very few expectations, other than to grow and learn the game at the collegiate level.

The expectations for the defense though, are not diminished by the loss of Pachall. Instead, they are amplified.

It's now up to this unit to carry the Frogs throughout the rest of the season, and at the rate they're playing right now, that doesn't exactly inspire confidence in me.

They have been gashed consistently by runs between the tackles, and give up dink and dunk passes all day. Against Iowa State it led to two deep passes that saw Kevin White get beaten on deep routes.

The D-line has gotten decent pressure this year, but the secondary and the linebackers need to continue to work to support the D-line. A line can get all the pressure in the world, but if the receivers are open they'll never get to the quarterback.

Same goes for the stopping the run. The line can get a good push, but the linebackers need to fill the holes.

We'll see how Patterson and his staff have begun to right the ship against Baylor this week. It's going to be a difficult test for the defense, as Nick Florence has picked up almost exactly where RGIII left off.

The offense should be able to move the ball a little, but a little likely won't be enough.

It's going to be a long game, and an even longer back end of the season. Frog fans need to stick it out, because good things could still happen this season, and they most definitely will in 2013.

Go Frogs.

Live blogging Gary Patterson's press conference, for TCU's game with Baylor, and the announcement about Casey Pachall's suspension for DUI.

Keep it here for updates from TCU coach Gary Patterson's press conference. Refresh often. The transcription is not exact, and usually I can't hear the questions. This is for gist only, with better quotations and commentary to follow.

Patterson is focused on getting to six wins. But the Pachall announcement-- lots of talking and thinking about what to do. Pachall is going to rehab for 30 to 60 days, and will not be enrolled at TCU this semester. Pachall expects to re-enroll for the spring, and graduate in two semesters.

Patterson is glad that so many have reached out to help Pachall, and the whole team. He says he has 124 still to take care of, and has to do the right thing for the whole team. CGP says a one-game or three-game suspension will not make a difference; he has to change the kid's life. Stepping back, if you don't win ballgames because you play a freshman instead of a junior, folks lose jobs, people talk badly about the kids. This kind of thing affects kids' whole lives. Jason Phillips talked about this in 2007 after playing a season without Tommy Blake at full speed-- it was emotionally tiring.

After talking with Casey Pachall's parents, they decided Pachall needed to step away from the whole situation for awhile. Both Pachall and TCU get a chance to heal and to grow. We're still going to try to win football games. We've done it before Pachall, and will do it after.

Boykin played tailback two days last week, and only got one day to prepare for the Iowa State game. TCU went through this before when Chad Huffman went pro in the MLB. Dalton hadn't mentally prepared himself for that, but had to hurry it up. These kind of situations come up-- I've been here for 15 years, and have done this for 30-- we approach these problems straight up.

TCU has a drug recovery program new this semester, and Kelsey and I are going to pledge $100,000 towards that group to help them get more facilitators. Casey is just one of millions. This is a big struggle, and we want to make sure that this is a positive for others.

[Did you do enough the first time?] You can't do things on hearsay. Suspending Casey for three games might have made it worse. If I was going to do anything, maybe Pachall needed not to play a full year. You can't always tell from the outside. People tiptoe around alcoholism because they don't always know what-- everybody is different. I took the facts I had, and did what I thought was the best decision, for this team, for Casey Pachall, and for this university.

I could not forgive myself if I allowed Pachall later on to harm somebody. I know that the plan we have in place tries to do something about it.

[What is required for Pachall to come back and play next year?] The biggest step is what he's doing right now; they have trained professionals who are going to make a difference.

[What does the team say about this?] I didn't ask the team. I'll talk with them later on. We're playing Baylor, and that's why we're here. Not because of Pachall. Baylor deserves our attention because they're a good football team; it's a rivalry we've been playing for years, and we have to finda way to win by one more point.

[Casey's reaction?] I think he's scared. Athletes (maybe males generally) it's hard for them to say they're sorry, and say they were wrong, and show any weakness. They have to have the strength to go out in front of 100,000 people and perform at a high level. Everybody I've talked to who has this addiction says it doesn't get cured until it hits rock bottom, and I admit I have a problem, and I have to fix this or it's not gonna change. We're not talking about about ... we're saving somebody's life. It's my kid. I don't care what anybody else thinks-- as parents we have to help my kid. It doesn't just affect one, it affects 125. How about the rest of 'em? It helps them move on. Travone Boykin and Matt Brown are our guys; it closes the door and we've gotta find a way to go do it. It's like Ross Forrest- he's not playing this season because of season-ending injuries; Michael Thompson had surgery and isn't playing anymore this season. Travoskey Garrett isn't playing. Matt Anderson; I'm not taking anything away from them either. I'm excited-- we could have won on Saturday if we avoided a couple mistakes.

I'm not deciding to change our style of play when we're playing 16 true freshman.

[What's the on-campus group?] TCU Recovers Support Group. We're gonna help escalate that so that it can be a bigger deal on campus. It's a problem on every campus.

The Tommy Blake situation was tougher than this one; you don't have any answers for mind problems. People are scared of those problems and answers.

The professionals will determine whether Casey is an alcoholic; that's not for me to say. I'm not suspending him for 3 games because I don't think it will change him. We're trying to help him. For you who think we're all about wins and losses, you're wrong. It's still about kids. This biggest thing he has is he, even without this semester, is he can graduate in two semesters and a summer, easily. We've gone through all the NCAA, Big12, rules-- that's why I needed to wait until today-- to make sure we had all the paperwork put together, to pick a place for him. HOpefully he understands; I texted him this morning, I'm proud of him. I know he's scared; it's unknown. We all can fight what we can see. How do you deal with that [addition you can't see].

[Do you change your recruiting because of this, to discourage graduating early?] No. Josh Boyce came in early that same semester. In Casey's case, he came, Andy was here, he redshirted a full season, and then he sat through and was a backup for a full year. He wasn't put into the situation until he was ready.

Both Coach Burns and I talked to the team; that night after practice. For me, that was one of the checkmarks leading to the decision, saying, "Now, fellas, we don't need to be out, we need to get our rest." Probably a few more of them were out that same night, it's hard for you to believe, I know. Probably a few more of them than him didn't do their homework, thought they could put it off.

When Pachall and his parents left my office, it wasn't "You need to do this," it was his decision. He needed to know he had an opportunity to come back here. He had to have hope. It's not just athletes who go to school in order to do other things. Casey was a really good student out of high school.

[Is there a new scholly available now?] Casey can come back in January if he's clean. The doctors have to tell me that he's changed. Do you want a 10-step list? There is no answer right now; right now he's trying to find where he's at.

[What's university policy for a DUI?] There is, I won't say what it is. I know you don't get kicked out after one offense. There's a difference between DWI and DUI; Casey had a DWI. For me this is more than one strike. The easiest thing for me to do at the beginning of the season is to kick Casey off the team for a year, then I have an excuse for losing games. That's how people do it all the time. But I'm not in this line of work to save me. You should see my emails; some are not from TCU people, and they don't want Casey Pachall to play. Nowadays you can see where emails come from; it's amazing how some people who run businesses and all that. I hope they don't treat their people.

[How's Boykin?] Boykin reminded me of Dalton in Air Force in 2007, when Dalton played pretty well, but lost. Our 1s and 2s get the same amount of reps. Last week Boykin was taking tailback reps until Thursday. THis week he's got all week. That doesn't mean he's going to be Joe Namath. Just go down the list of freshmen or redshirt freshmen who are playing-- I told them we can't treat them like young players anymore.

I'm excited about him-- he has a wealth of talent and he likes to play the game. No matter what happens, we have a lot of talent and will do good things. It's not a sprint, it's a race. Iowa State beat Texas a couple years ago, last year beat Texas Tech.

I don't know if we'd have won any more games ahead of us with Casey Pachall; maybe we'd have won them all. Experience at quarterback ups your chances, it's been proven, but I don't think about that. My job is to move forward.

The chancellor and I talked about what to do; we discussed. It wasn't him telling me what to do. There's just no way to do it halfway; to change his life. We had to make a strong decision. It came down to-- Casey didn't have to do this. Kids know; when I asked him, he's scared. I would be, too.

[Is the team's drug problem better since February?] It's not why we did this, but I think it sends a message. SOme kids think, "Coach won't let him go because he's that good." It's never been that way. If you don't make good decisions, the football gods will come back a repay you threefold. I don't know if this will work out, but you have to try. That's why Kelsey and I have decided to step up, and not only help Casey Pachall, but help others. We're trying to help kids.

FOW's bloggers analyze TCU's upcoming game with Iowa State, and the rest of the season, with the news that Casey Pachall is likely not going to suit up in purple and (black, white, etc.) anymore.

Frogs o' War bloggers take a look at this week's game against Iowa State, without Pachall leading TCU's offense, and also at the rest of the season.

PURPLE WIMPLE
For Iowa State: I still think TCU wins this game. Matt Tucker is "probable" for the start, and to be frank, I'm not convinced Boykin runs the offense at any less of a pitch than Pachall did. He's going to run more, and a heck of a lot better than Pachall, and that's not a bad thing. Iowa State's defense will force him to make some mistakes, but I think TCU has the horses to win this game without a .15 BAC, if you catch my drift.

For The Remainder Of The Season: It's not going to be news that I think TCU was going to be underdogs most of the rest of the way. Pachall was going to read the defenses better than Boykin this season, and we'll miss that. But the win-loss totals may not show the difference; TCU has been setting itself up to lose plenty of games in 2012, with or without Pachall. What is going to change is the reasons people come up with for the losses. Aviante Collins and Big V and the o-line aren't going to be the scapegoats now; they going to be co-scapegoats with Boykin. Every time the redshirt freshman throws an interception or keeps the ball too long and takes a sack, we're going to hear, "Pachall would have gotten rid of it in that situation." And sometimes that will be true; but not always.

So we add another way to explain a loss to the bucket of lists, which is already bulging. And we say to ourselves, "2013." Repeat it-it has a nice ring to it.

FUNGO FROG
For Iowa State: Listen, I would love to say that Iowa State still sucks, Boykin is awesome and we will still win easily, but that is just not true. Iowa State is a good team with real talent, and Boykin is a real freshman with limited expierience (albeit, worlds of talent) who, even if he knows all the plays, hasn't seen more than 3-5 of them unfold against an oposing defefense. Freshman QBs dont understand check downs, they don't understand going to a second read, they don't understand leadership. Sure, I can imagine and day dream about a TCU romp, but that isn't reality, and the Vegas line shows that (almost into single digits).

For the rest of the season: I think TCU will win Saturday, but not easily, and I hope that TCU continues with Boykin for the rest of the year, it is time to get this chapter started. I have a feeling that most of the current players are probably ready for a change too, just a guess, and I can't blame them. Since February, it hasn't been about them, the guys who are doing it right, it has been about other people, other losers who keep getting it wrong. It is time to get the RIGHT guys on the field, suit em up, and go to battle. It might get ugly, this might not work, but we have to move on to the next guy up and hope for the best. We have broken in two young quarterbacks in recent years with some success, with any luck we will do it again now.

JAMIE PLUNKETT
For the Iowa State Game: Well, I think it's a good thing that Trevone Boykin has been preparing against this Iowa State defense all week with the thought of being a primary running back. He's seen a ton of game film on common schemes and blitz packages the Cyclones like to run. The one minor (ha) adjustment he'll have o make is that now he'll be the one with the ball in his hands at the snap. Nothing changes for the Frogs defense, who will still be able to stifle a very underwhelming Iowa State offense. Frogs-27, Cyclones-10

For the rest of the season: It’s good that Boykin is coming in now, and not in a few weeks when the pressure gets turned up to 11. However, I fully expect some growing pains with a redshirt freshman at quarterback, especially behind an offensive line that has struggled to keep its backfield upright to this point in the season. Things will not be pretty from here on out, but make no mistake about it: Boykin has the talent to lead this team. Let’s just hope he’s a quick learner.

TREY FALLON aka ANGRY TREY
For the Iowa State Game: I thought this game would we close to begin with so my opinion doesn’t change, it just might be a little closer than expected. TCU’s defense can lead them to victory in this game, for the rest of the season I am not so sure.

For The Remainder Of The Season: I am confident in Trevone Boykin. I think he has the talent to be a very good QB, but he is young. We will definitely see some growing pains from him, but he will also impress some people this season. My original prediction was for TCU to win 9 games, I don’t think they will get to that point now, but based on what we have seen this season, nothing will surprise me. At this stage of the season, I just hope the Frogs make a bowl game.

HawkeyedFrog

For the Iowa State Game: On such short notice I think that the offense will simplify some, with a whole lot of quarterback read options and basic one route passes. TCU's defense will need to stifle Iowa State on the ground to win and be at least even in turnover margin, but I think they get it done.

For the Remainder of the Season: TCU becomes an underdog in all games where it wasn't already, I'm no longer confident about holding serve at home and I'm ready to put the Texas game firmly out of reach. As for bowl eligibility, which is what we need to be shooting for now- with all of the youth we're playing this year we need those practices for the 2013 season. I think TCU pulls out either the Baylor game or the Tech game and gets to six wins, but if we lose to the Cyclones and need both it becomes a much dicier proposition.

It's somewhat surprising that Pachall wasn't kicked off the team all together, to be honest.

However, now is the start of the Trevone Boykin era at TCU. The redshirt freshman out of West Mesquite hasn't seen much of the field this year, and the majority of his playing time came against Grambling State.

He's thrown for 74 yards and a touchdown on nine of 10 passing this season, to go along with 122 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

He'll be backed up by freshman Tyler Matthews.
